Equity Analysts maintain large sets of related data and documents, which they must continuously update, analyse, and present to clients. Like most Professionals, they started building personal data bases using spreadsheets, and transferring information to presentation packages to create reports for clients.
Challenges:
Equity analysts were encountering challenges that spreadsheets are not primarily intended to address, specifically:
- Need to assemble and keep current vast amounts of data- without a database
- Basic record is individual share/company, with supporting documents and links
- Challenge is to identify patterns and find comparative opportunities or 'outliers'
- Simulations and sensitivity analyses are multi-variate
- Results must be shared with clients, ideally in branded, interactive, visual format
- Need to assemble and keep current vast amounts of data- without a database
- Typical client query: "which banks in your coverage universe have an RoE above 15% but a minimum core solvency ratio of 7%, trade at a 1-Y forward PE below 13x and at a P/BV multiple below 1.5% …with a cost-income ratio above 75% … no, sorry, say a cost-income ratio below 73%?”
